Community at Temple Israel
Rabbi’s Message – October 2, 2024

As the High Holidays approach, our Jewish community finds itself swept up in a whirlwind of events and emotions, making it difficult to maintain focus. We turn inward, expressing the deep prayers of our hearts, while also being called to take action—mending relationships with friends and loved ones. Throughout this time, our hearts and minds remain attuned to the struggles faced by those in Israel who continue to find themselves under fire.
In our quest for hope in a new year filled with peace, health, and prosperity, I draw comfort and resolve from the words of Rabindranath Tagore, India’s first Nobel laureate. In an excerpt from his poignant poem “The Grasp of Your Hand,” he reminds us:
“Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers,
but to be fearless in facing them.
Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain, but
for the heart to conquer it.”
This year, more than ever, we must remember that we are a resilient people. The strength we seek can be found within ourselves and within the bonds of our community. As we come together tonight and tomorrow, let us uplift one another and remind each other that we are not alone as we face the challenges ahead. Together, let us embrace the strength of our community, forging a path of courage and resilience into the new year.

Thank you for reminding us to walk with hope and live with love.
