Rabbi’s Message – November 7, 2024

Jewish food has a way of bringing people together. Whether it’s the smell of challah baking in the oven or the warmth of a bowl of matzo ball soup, food plays a central role in Jewish life, connecting us to tradition, family, and community. But Jewish food isn’t just about the meals themselves—it’s about the stories behind them, the values they represent, and the memories they help create.
Across centuries and continents, Jewish communities have created diverse culinary traditions, blending local flavors with the laws of kashrut. From the rich, savory dishes of Eastern Europe to the vibrant, spice-filled flavors of the Sephardic world, Jewish food reflects the vast diaspora and its journeys. Each dish tells a story—of survival, celebration, or sacred time.
But if you’re new to Jewish traditions (or even if you’re not!), figuring out how to prepare or share food in Jewish spaces can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. What’s kosher? What are the rules? How do you know what to bring to a holiday meal? What foods are appropriate for different occasions? These questions are all part of the learning process, and they’re exactly what we’ll be diving into at our upcoming Savoring Tradition program on November 14.
Join us for this Lunch & Learn where we will explore the fascinating history and diversity of Jewish food, giving you a deeper sense of how food has shaped Jewish communities across the world. I will also try to break down the basics of kashrut and offer practical advice for navigating Jewish dietary customs with ease. And of course, no food program would be complete without tastings! Our adult education committee is preparing samples of delicious recipes and a few goodies to take home.
Whether you’re looking to deepen your connection to Jewish culture or just want to try some new and traditional flavors of Jewish life, Savoring Tradition is a chance to explore, learn, and savor together.
