Embracing the Magic: Reflections from Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI)

Shalom from Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI)!  As a rabbi, I feel incredibly fortunate to spend two weeks here in Zionsville, Indiana, witnessing firsthand the transformative power of Jewish summer camp.  It’s been a joy to see young Jewish leaders beginning their journeys and to be a part of the meaningful experiences that unfold here every year.

Research tells us that camp plays a crucial role in shaping Jewish identity for young people, fostering a deep sense of belonging and pride. Here at GUCI, campers don’t just learn about Judaism—they live it. They engage in lively discussions, grapple with important questions, and find a true sense of community.

Having experienced other URJ camps, I can say that GUCI has a special charm all its own. Its program offers abundant opportunities for building community, personal growth, and strengthening Jewish identity, all infused with plenty of singing and amusing shtick.  

As a rabbi, former camper and staff member, and now a parent, I’m deeply moved by the friendships that form here—lasting bonds that extend far beyond the summer months. I’m inspired by the dedicated counselors, many of whom grew up at GUCI themselves, serving as role models and mentors. They find fulfillment in passing on the magic of GUCI to the next generation.

As these young campers prepare to return home, they carry with them the lasting impact of their time at GUCI. May their experiences continue to inspire and guide them, lighting their paths with the wisdom and warmth of Jewish tradition.
