Rabbi’s Message – December 7, 2023
Just a mere two months ago, on Yom Kippur, we delved into the significance of leading lives marked by integrity, emphasizing the alignment of our actions with our values and the fulfillment of our commitments. At the core of these reflections was the value of Ahavat Yisrael, love for Israel.
Now is an opportune time for us to translate our love for Israel into tangible actions—to go beyond words and truly walk the walk. Many of you have already demonstrated your solidarity by participating in gatherings or events, such as the March for Israel in Washington, D.C., or by engaging in activities like writing letters to soldiers and reaching out to political leaders.
But our brethren in Israel are still in urgent need of our help and support. As we approach the end of the year, I propose a specific avenue through which we can express our love for Israel. Numerous Israelis, particularly those living on the Gaza border, have been displaced with little more than the clothes on their backs, facing destroyed homes and abandoned fields. In response, Leket Israel, the national food bank, has adapted its operations to provide emergency relief projects for residents and evacuees from northern and southern Israel.
Since October 7, Leket has been mobilizing volunteers to assist farmers in harvesting their produce. Moreover, they have been delivering meals and essential supplies, including much-needed clothing, to those affected by the conflict. By supporting Leket’s work, you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those Israelis most impacted by the war in Israel.
If you choose to express your Ahavat Yisrael through supporting Leket’s initiatives, your tax-deductible donations can be directed to my discretionary account (with “Leket” in the subject line). These contributions will directly contribute to aiding those affected by the conflict. Additionally, we welcome and encourage monetary gifts to Temple Israel, regardless of their size. Your generosity serves as a crucial investment in our community’s future, sustaining vibrant programs, maintaining our sacred space, and supporting initiatives that strengthen our interconnectedness.
As we consider our year-end giving, let us collectively embody the spirit of Ahavat Yisrael by supporting initiatives that provide tangible assistance to those in need. Your contributions, whether directed towards Leket Israel or Temple Israel, play a vital role in shaping the future of our Jewish community.
