Rabbi’s Message -May 14, 2026
On May 1, Temple Israel had the privilege of welcoming Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, to Dayton for an evening that celebrated not only Jewish leadership and learning, but the strength and continuity of our own community.
The evening was especially meaningful because it brought together multiple generations of Temple Israel life. Alongside Rabbi Jacobs’ visit, we also honored our graduating seniors and celebrated our teachers and madrichim whose dedication helps shape the next generation of Jewish identity, learning, and connection.
Before services, Rabbi Jacobs spent time in conversation with congregational leaders and members, listening thoughtfully and sharing reflections on the evolving landscape of Jewish life across North America. During the service itself, he offered a message centered on hope—particularly at a moment marked by uncertainty, rising antisemitism, and the ongoing war in Israel. His words acknowledged the heaviness many are carrying while also reminding us that Judaism has always insisted on the possibility of hope, resilience, and renewal even in difficult times.
There was something especially moving about the rhythm of the evening itself: honoring students preparing to leave for college and new adventures, thanking the teachers and madrichim who helped guide them, and then hearing Rabbi Jacobs speak about the future of Jewish life with both honesty and optimism. It felt like a real snapshot of what congregational life is meant to be.
We are deeply grateful to Rabbi Jacobs for making time to be with our Dayton community during an exceptionally busy season, and grateful to all who joined us for worship, celebration, and dinner afterward.
